korientation empfiehlt: Konferenz /// Asians in Europe. Global Labour Migration and Transnational Communities

14.09.2009-14.09.2009, University of Salzburg /// Sylvia Hahn, Dep. of History/University of Salzburg; in cooperation with
Lars Amenda, IMIS, University of Osnabrück, Salzburg

Europe and Asia have a long common history that has attracted a large amount of attention lately. Not only did European colonial powers build vast empires in the “Far East” but Asian migrants also came to Europe. The conference aims to bring together new research on Asian migration to Europe and to combine global, national and local perspectives. Different case studies on Asian migrants will explore the role of European hubs for transnational networks and communities on the one hand and European responses on the other. Despite their generally small numbers, migrants from Asia often played a crucial role in the formation of national migration regimes. Although Europe was located at the margin of Asian migration, this experience clearly elucidates patterns of global migration. Given the fact that Asian migrants had a strong symbolic significance that embodied the global migrant, it is clear that historical research has to consider the literal bodies of these migrants into account by focusing on gender as well as ethnicity.
